International Practice

Our firm has been at the forefront of the international practice of law for decades. Our core clientele is made up of individuals, corporations of all sizes, and governments in relation to their activities outside of their national borders. With offices in Canada and Europe and correspondents around the world, we have a wealth of experience in trans-border issues and transactions. Many of our lawyers have studied more than one legal system in depth and speak several languages fluently.

International legal issues can arise in a variety of contexts, such as contracts, investment, finance, trade, insolvency, taxation, and estates. Only with considerable experience can lawyers trained in any one jurisdiction learn to identify potentially significant international issues and opportunities, whether arising from foreign laws, customs or institutions, or from the operation of international treaties and other sources of international law.

International Investment and Transactions

We are committed to supporting our clients as they grow their businesses, whether in Canada or abroad. We are particularly sensitive to the special needs of foreign corporations and individuals seeking to establish a business or to conduct business in new jurisdictions. We provide our clients with investments in foreign jurisdictions with advice on the special concerns of doing business abroad. Such concerns include compliance with local regulatory requirements and strategies to minimize potential commercial and political risks.

In all cases, we work closely with local counsel in foreign jurisdictions to help achieve our clients' objectives. We have provided support and strategic advice on behalf of our clients to assist local counsel in foreign jurisdictions in the context of many types of international transactions. We have also acted as lead transaction counsel to manage and coordinate all legal aspects of a variety of international transactions, from corporate reorganizations and financings, to infrastructure-related deals involving clients in sectors ranging from mining to clean-tech.

International Trade

We have significant experience in the field of international trade.  We advise clients on issues relating to the import and export of goods and services from and to various jurisdictions, particularly under the North American Free Trade Agreement and European Union legislation. We also provide advice on anti-dumping and related matters. Our international trade lawyers regularly act for clients engaged in international sales transactions, assisting those clients with the negotiation and drafting of international trade agreements, letters of credit, and other trade finance documents.
