Marie
Dumas studied political science and economics at McGill University
before undertaking her legal studies at University of Sherbrooke. She
obtained her Bachelor of Law in 1990 and was sworn in as a member of the
Quebec Bar in 1991. Marie initially focused her practice on
civil litigation before joining an international consulting and
accounting firm. With her academic background, her practical skills
developed through litigation and an affinity for business, Marie quickly
developed an expertise in providing complex yet practical,
business-oriented tax advice. Marie spent close to 10 years as a key
member of the tax department during which she was responsible for
implementing, promoting and developing the tax services related to
international tax, expatriate services and trusts (both resident and
non-resident). Her clients included major private and public US and
European companies doing business in Canada. Marie joined Lette
& Associés sencrl in September 2009. She advises on
international tax matters related to complex cross-border transactions,
foreign investment, corporate reorganizations and shareholder
agreements, international assignments, as well as resident and
non-resident trusts. She works closely with business leaders to
advise and assist them on company expansion and foreign investment.
She is often called upon to negotiate with the tax authorities in
the context of international commercial transactions, international
estates and the voluntary disclosure of offshore holdings.
Marie’s clients include a wide range of domestic and foreign companies
as well as high net worth families. She also acts as a trustee of family
trusts and advises on trust law. Marie regularly writes articles
and gives presentations on current international tax issues.
